Subject:. Support for the City of Aiameda's Proposed Prohibition of Polystyrene Foam Food
Service Ware
Dear Ms. Kurita:
The San Francisco Bay Regional dater Quality Control Board staff wishes to express .our strong
support for the City of Alan~eda's proposed ordinance prohibiting polystyrene foam food service ware.
We share the concerns, stated in your December 18, 2007 memorandum on this subject posted at
http:llwww.ci.alameda.ca.uslarchive120071attachmentslcc~sub~465. df }, that Polystyrene Foam is
easily carried by wind .or stormwater runoff into stormdrains, our creeks, and the San Francisco
Estuary, Once in our water bodies, Polystyrene Foam does not biodegrade, but rather continues to
cause harm indefinitely. It decreases the aesthetic value of our~strea~ns and beaches, clogs stormdrains
and stream, outlets, and can be ingested by marine organisms. As you note in your memo, scientists
have documented the harmful effects of Polystyrene Foam in our oceans as well,
~e are pleased to see that the City of Alameda proposes take part in mitigating this pervasive problem
and encourage the City Council to adopt the proposed ordinance. -
Sincerely,
.
