Re: Item 7 or 8 Council Referral -Bicycle Issues
Dear members of the city council,
I would like to comment on the council referral for bike issues;
1.1Vlarketinq and promotion of use of city bicvcle lockers (at City Hall, in the Civic Center garage, etc.
BikeAlameda would like to see the city devote some funds to outreach for the successful additions in 2008 to
bicycle infrastructure. The electronic bike lockers, the two-way bike path and the Oak street sharrows are all new
kinds of bike facilities. The bicycling and driving public have not been adequately educated on the use of these
facilities. The bike lockers have a tremendous capacity, but outreach has to be directed to those who could
benefit.
2. Consideration of bicvcle crossing using the Fruitvale Bridge and associated bike lanes. The second most
important roadway for bicyclists is the FruitvalelTilden road and bridge to Fruitvale BART. This roadway is
currently high-speed and high capacity, but has a dangerous curve for bicyclists. The sidewalk is currently shared
by bicyclists and pedestrians and the roadway is shared by cars and bicyclists. Currently, this roadway is not a
complete street and does not serve bicyclists well. It is the one access to Fruitvale BART, Alameda County is in
the process of reconfiguring the roadway. Please ask that city staff meet with county staff and BikeAlameda to
find the best possible solution for bicyclists, walkers and cars. The chance is now to make changes while the
configuration is in progress
3. Details on the implementation of bicvcle parking serving the block of Central Avenue between Oak and Park
Streets (specific timeline and promoting use) We would like to have specific discussion with city staff and
neighboring businesses to find the best bike parking solution in this area. The current recommendations DO NOT
meet the needs of bicyclists and, we feel, would be money and time sorely spent. A good solution could be used
as an example for other business areas and this can only come from a good discussion between bicyclists, staff
and businesses.
Thank you for your consideration.
Respectfully,
Lucy Gigli
President, BikeAlameda
