Resolution 14438CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION 14 4 3 8 SUPPORTING MEASURE E, THE ALAMEDA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PARCEL TAX WHEREAS, the State of California has dramatically reduced funding for education over the past several years in an effort to balance its budget; and WHEREAS, additional reductions can be expected as the State grapples with an estimated $19 billion budget deficit through the end of FYI 0 -11; and WHEREAS, the Alameda Unified School District will be forced to reduce its budget by $7.4 million in the 2010 -2011 school year to accommodate the State's funding reductions; and WHEREAS, the proposed spending cuts will affect class size reduction in grades K -3, high school sports programs, swim centers, school counselors, Gifted and Talented Education, adult education, art, and music; and WHEREAS, the School District will also be forced to close elementary, middle, and high school sites; and WHEREAS, to offset these budget cuts, the Alameda Unified School District is asking voters to support a parcel tax that would replace the existing Measures A and H and levy a tax of $659 per residential parcel and 13 cents per square foot for commercial /industrial parcels; and WHEREAS, Measure E contains exemptions for seniors and residents receiving supplemental security income for a disability; and WHEREAS, Measure E would raise approximately $14 million per year for the Alameda Unified School District. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Alameda supports Measure E, the Alameda Unified School District's proposed parcel tax.
