AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE
ALAMEDA ' MUNICIPAL CODE BY
ADDING TO CHAPTER 1, TITLE XI
THEREOF, A NEW ARTICLE TO BE
NUMBERED ARTICLE 3 -Ai RELAT-
ING TO THE PROVISION OF OFF -
STREET PARKING IN CONNEC-
TION WITH DWELLINGS AND
OTHER STRUCTURES.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUN-
CIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA as
follows:
SECTION 1. That the Alameda Muni-
cipal Code be, and the same is hereby
amended by adding to Chapter 1, Title
XI thereof, a new article to be num-
bered Article 3 -A, which shall read as
follows:
Article 3 -A. Off - Street Parking
Required in Connection With
Dwellings and Other Structures.
See. 11- 1371. For the purpose of this
Article, certain terms and words are
hereby defined as follows:
"Dwelling 'Dwelling Unit." Two (2) or
more roams in a dwelling or apart-
ment house designed for occupancy by
one (1) family for living and sleeping
purposes and having only one (1)
kitchen.
(b) Main Building or Structure."
Any building or structure other than a
detached accessory building on the
same lot, the use of which accessory
building is customarily incidental to
that of the main building or to the
main use of the land;
(c) "Parking Space. A usable area,
accessible from the street, exclusive of
areas intended for other uses, available
for the parking of one (1) automobile
and with minimum dimensions of eight
(8) feet by eighteen (18) feet.
Sec. 11 -1372. Automobile Parking —
Required Space. A garage or an off -
street automobile parking area shall
be provided at the time of the erec-
tion of any of the main buildings or
structures hereinafter specified, or at
the time such main buildings or struc-
tures are altered, enlarged, converted
or increased in capacity by adding
dwelling units, guest rooms, floor area
or seats. The capacity required in such
mined by the number of dwelling units,
guest rooms, seats, or by the floor area
contained in said main buildings or
structures. Where an increase in capa-
city, is created by additional main
buildings , or - structures, or alteration,
enlargement, conversion, or otherwise,
the requirements of this ordinance
shall apply to both the existing build -
ings and the new development.
Said garages or parking areas shall
be maintained thereafter in connection
with said buildings or structures, with
adequate provision for ingress and
egress. The location and capacity of the
garage or automobile parking area
shall be as follows:
(a) In the single family and two-
family districts there shall be a pri-
vate garage - located on the same lot
with each dwelling, which garage shall
brovide a parking space for each

ings, which garages or parking area
shall have a parking space for each
dwelling unit on the let.
(c) In the case of a dwelling' pres-
ently existing or hereafter constructed
in a zoning district of lower classifica-
tion'than the zoning; district specific -
ally provided for dwellings of its par-
ticular type, (as, for example, a mul-
tiple dwelling in a commercial dis-
trict) the garage and parking area re-
quirements for such dwelling shall be
those applicable to dwellings of its
own particular type located in the
zoning district specifically provided
therefor.
(d) For buildings other than dwell-
ings: In all zones, the garage or park-
ing area required in connection with
the following buildings or structures
shall be located on the same lot or not
more than 590 feet therefrom and said
garage or parking area shall have ca-
pacities as follows:
1. For hotels, apartment hotels, room-
ing houses, boarding houses and clubs,
at least one (1) parking space for each
guest room or suite. In rooming or
boarding houses where the occupancy
is increased to more than five (5)
guest rooms but no building permits
are required, the City License Collector'
shall refer the license application to
the City Planning Department for
clearance as to the off- street parking
provisions required by this ordinance
2. For tourist courts, auto courts or
motels, at least one (1) parking space
for each sleeping or living unit con-
tained in said courts or motels.
(e) For existing buildings: Off- street
parking space presently being main-
tained in connection with any exist-
ing main building or structure shall
be maintained so long as said main
building or structure remains, unless
an equivalent number of such spaces
is provided in conformity with the
requirements of this subsection; pro-
vided, however, that this regulation
shall not be construed to require the
maintenance of more parking area
than is required by this Article for a
new building or structure, nor the
maintenance of such parking area for
any type, of main building or struc-
ture other than those specified herein.
SECTION 2. This ordinance shall be
in full force and effect from and after
the expiration of thirty (30) days train
the date of its final passage.
