AMENDING THE ALAMEDA MUNICIPAL CODE BY AMENDING
SECTION 7--334 OF AND ADDING SECTIONS 7- -3325 AND
7 -3326 TO ARTICLE 3, CHAPTER 3 OF TITLE VII,THEREOF,
REGULATING THE OPERATION OF BICYCLES AND USE OF
BICYCLE LANES
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA that:
Section 1 . Section 7 -334 of the Alameda Municipal Code is
hereby amended to read as follows:
Sec. 7 -334 Lane of Travel. Right Side of Roadway.
(a) Any Person operating a bicycle upon any street
of Alameda at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic
moving in the same direction at such time, shall ride as
close as practicable to the right -hand curb or edge of the
roadway except under any of the following situations:
(1) When overtaking and passing another bicycle or
vehicle proceeding in the same direction.
(2) When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or
into a private road or driveway.
(3) When reasonably necessary to avoid conditions (in-
cluding but not limited to, fixed or moving objects,
vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, surface
hazards, or substandard width lanes) that make it
unsafe to continue along the right -hand curb or edge.
(b) Bicycle Path Wherever a usable path for bicycles
has been provided adjacent to a roadway, bicycle riders

shall use such path and shall not use the roadway.
(c) Bicycle Lane. Wherever a bicycle lane has been
established on a roadway, any person operating a bicycle
upon the roadway at a speed less than the normal speed of
traffic moving in the same direction shall ride within the
bicycle lane, except that such person may move out of the
lane under any of the following situations:
(1) When overtaking and passing another bicycle, vehicle,
or pedestrian within the lane or about to enter the
lane if such overtaking and passing cannot be done
safely within the lane.
(2) When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or
into a private road or driveway.
(3) When reasonably necessary to leave the bicycle lane
to avoid debris or other hazardous conditions.
Section 2 . Article 3, Chapter 3 of Title VII of the Alameda
Municipal code is hereby amended by adding Sections 7 -3325 and
7 -3326 thereto to read as follows:
Sec. 7 -3325 No Motor Vehicles in Bicycle Lane
Whenever a. bicycle lane has been established on a roadway,
any person operating a motor vehicle in such roadway shall
not drive within this bicycle lane except to park where
parking is permitted, to enter or leave the roadway, or
prepare for a turn.

Sec. 7 -3326 O eration of Bicycle. Bicy cle Dane.
No person operating a bicycle shall leave a bicycle lane
until the movement can be made with reasonable safety and
then only after giving an appropriate signal.
Section 3 . This ordinance is one of great necessity and
urgency within the meaning of Section 3 -12 of the City Charter,
is introduced and passed at the same Council meeting and shall
become effective on March 16, 1977.
Section 4 . The facts constituting the necessity and
urgency hereof are:
1. That traffic regulations are essential for the
orderly flow and control of traffic within the City.
2. That such regulations should necessarily be
immediately effective on passage to insure that maximum preserva-
tion of public welfare is obtained.
3. That a potential health and safety problem will exist
if such amendments are not immediately effective.
4. That, in light of such potential health and safety
problems involved, the normal delay between enactment of this
ordinance and its effective date would be injurious.
5. This Council hereby finds, determines and declares
that it is in the best in, -rest and necessity that this
ordinance be introduced and passed at the regtlar meeting of

the City Council held March 15, 1977, and that this ordinance
become and be in full force and effect March 16, 1977.
