CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 1 5 0
APPROVING THE ZERO WASTE IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
WHEREAS, on February 8, 2008, the City of Alameda City Council adopted the
City's Local Action Plan for Climate Protection and identified the development and
adoption of a Zero Waste Plan as a top priority for reaching the City's goal to reduce
green house gas emissions City-wide to 25% below 2005 levels by the year 2020; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda has met and exceeded the state's 50%
recycling goal; and
WHEREAS, over 48,000 tons of discarded materials and products are continuing
to be sent to landfills from the City of Alameda community on an annual basis; and
WHEREAS, a waste characterization study determined that 79% of what is
currently being sent to landfills is either recyclable or compostable; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda is poised to move beyond waste management
to envisioning a world without waste.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Alameda, that the Zero Waste Improvement Plan is adopted.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and
regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda during the Regular
Meeting of the City Council on the 19th day of October, 2010, by the following vote to
wit:
AYES: Councilmembers deHaan, Matarrese
and Mayor Johnson - 3.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: Councilmembers Gilmore and Tam - 2.
ABSTENTIONS: None.
