RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ALAMEDA OPPOSING THE GOVERNOR'S PROPOSED
REDUCTIONS IN FUNDING FOR SCHOOLS
WHEREAS, Governor Schwarzenegger released his budget proposal for
2008-09 fiscal year on January 10; and
WHEREAS, the Governor's budget recommends reducing education
funding by more than $4 billion in order to make up for a projected $14.5 billion
deficit; and
WHEREAS, the proposed list of reductions for schools targets basic per
student funding guaranteed by Proposition 98 as well as other programs; and
WHEREAS, the Alameda Unified School District will be forced to reduce
its budget by $4 — 5 million to accommodate the Governor's budget reductions;
and
WHEREAS, the Alameda Unified School District has already reduced its
budget by $7.7 million over the last seven years; and
WHEREAS, reducing the budget by an additional $4 — 5 million would
have a significant negative impact on students, the schools, and the Alameda
community and could lead to school closures; layoffs of teachers, counselors,
and other staff; and elimination of various programs.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City
of Alameda supports full funding for the schools, opposes the Governor's
proposed reductions, and urges the Governor and the Legislature to explore
alternate solutions to closing the State's budget gap.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and
regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda during the Regular
Meeting of the City Council on the 19th day of February, 2008, by the following vote to
wit:

and Mayor Johnson • 5.
