SUPPORTING CONTINUATION OF EXISTING MILITARY FACILITIES IN THE
BAY AREA AND RECOGNIZING THEIR IMPORTANCE TO THE ECONOMIC
VITALITY OF THE REGION
WHEREAS, Defense Secretary Richard Cheney has released a list
of armed forces facilities to be studied for possible closure; and
WHEREAS, the Naval Air Station Alameda and the Naval Aviation
Depot at NAS Alameda are two of the five Bay Area Naval facilities
included on that list; and
WHEREAS, NAS Alameda was officially commissioned and began
operations on November 1, 1940, has served with distinction as a
major west coast facility in support of the defense of this
country and is recognized as an important arm of our national
defense system, and serves as homeport for major units of the
Pacific Fleet; and
WHEREAS, the strategic location and physical improvements of
NAS Alameda would not be available in the event of a major conflict
in the Pacific if there were a change in ownership and the facility
were used for non - defense purposes; and
WHEREAS, the Naval Aviation Depot serves as a world wide
leader in providing responsive maintenance, engineering, and
logistical services in support of our national defense and has been
held as an example of excellence in public sector management; and
WHEREAS, the Navy is an integral part of the Bay Area
contributing nearly $4 Billion to the economy, and serves as one
of the region's major employers with thousand of military personnel
and civilian jobs; and
WHEREAS, loss of the annual payroll from the Bay Area
facilities on the list would have a severe impact on this region
and cause unnecessary displacement of families and the elimination
of civilian and other allied jobs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the
City of Alameda goes on record as supporting the continued
operations of the Naval and other military facilities throughout
the Bay Area; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be
forwarded to the appropriate members of the Executive ands *.'
Legislative Branch of the Federal government, and in particular,
to Secretary Cheney and the California Congressional Delegation.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution
was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the
City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the 6th day of
February , 1990, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Counci1members Arnerich, Camicia, Thomas, Withrow and
President Corica - 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
ABSTENTIONS: None.
