CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 12105
COMMENDING MR. JIM COPELAND
FOR HIS EFFORTS RELATED TO SAVING
THE ALAMEDA NAVAL AIR STATION
WHEREAS, the Alameda Naval Air Station and Naval Aviation
Depot were among many military installations identified as
candidates for closure or re-alignment on Defense Secretary
Cheney's January 29, 1990 list submitted to Congress; and
WHEREAS, since that original list was made public, the Alameda
County Economic Advisory Board was formed under the direction of
Supervisor Don Perata; and
WHEREAS, a delegation including business, labor, base worker
representatives and elected officials flew to Washington, D. C. to
present the socio-economic and cost implication of the potential
base closure; and
WHEREAS, while in Washington, D. C., the delegation met with
27 congressional leaders, representatives from Federal Department
of Labor and Defense as well as meeting with representatives from
the Economic Development Administration and the Department of the
Navy; and
WHEREAS, the delegation's schedule and strategy were
facilitated by Mr. Jim Copeland, a respected advocate with the
District of Columbia firm, McAuliffe, Kelly, Raffaelli, Siemens;
and
WHEREAS, as a result of these exhausting efforts, neither NAS
Alameda nor Naval Aviation Depot were included on the April 15,
r1991 list submitted by Secretary Cheney to the Base Closure
Realignment Commission.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the
City of Alameda, consultant Mr. Jim Copeland is to be congratulated
on his efforts on behalf of local Naval Facilities and that his
4 efforts should not go unnoticed by the community.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution
was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the
City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the seventh of
May, 1991, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Arnerich, Camicia, Lucas, Roth
and President Withrow - 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
ABSTENTIONS: None.
