NOMINATING THE UNITED PILIPINOS OF ALAMEDA
FOR A SAN FRANCISCO FOUNDATION AWARD
WHEREAS, the United Pilipinos of Alameda, Inc., founded
January 6, 1976, is a California non - profit corporation, located
in the City of Alameda; and
WHEREAS, from 1976 to 1979, the United Pilipinos of
Alameda, Inc. sponsored cultural programs, partially funded by the
City of Alameda, to develop awareness and appreciation of Pilipino-
American culture; and
WHEREAS, since 1976, the United Filipinos of Alameda,
Inc. participated in a vocational training program, funded by the
Alameda County Training and Employment Board, (ACTEB), for
placement of low - income, unemployed or under - employed adults in
unsubsidized jobs; and
WHEREAS, approximately 800 students participated in the
vocational training program, with a drop -out rate of less than five
percent (5 %) and an approximate one hundred percent (100 %) job
placement; and
WHEREAS, from 1977 until 1990, the United Pilipinos of
Alameda, Inc. participated in a summer youth employment training
program, funded by ACTEB, which provided in school and out of
school work experience for low- income youth between 14 to 21 years
of age; and
WHEREAS, the United Pilipinos of Alameda, Inc. provided
LZ ,, the year -round program "Jobs West" for school youths between 16 to
21 years of age; and
WHEREAS, in the "Jobs West" program, participants select
a field according to ability and interest, for suitable placement
in schools or with employers, under the supervision and guidance
of the United Pilipinos of Alameda, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, in 1989, the "Jobs West" program received a
national award from the Secretary of Labor, Elizabeth Dole; and
WHEREAS, since 1983, United Pilipinos of Alameda, Inc.
has operated an emergency shelter for battered women and homeless
families which originally provided only five beds and is now
providing 18 beds; and
WHEREAS, the emergency shelter is run with great personal
commitment by the United Pilipinos of Alameda, Inc., with minimal
staff and minimal finances and offer shelter, counseling to locate
housing, job placement, and government assistance and provides
approximately seventy percent (70%) housing placement.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of
the City of Alameda that the United Pilipinos of Alameda, Inc. is
a worthy organization for nomination for the 17th Annual John R.
May Award of $5,000 for their organizational initiative in response
to a significant contemporary problem.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution
was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the
City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the eighteenth of
June, 1991, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Arnerich, Camicia, Lucas, Roth
and President Withrow - 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
ABSTENTIONS: None.
