RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LOCAL UNIT 02 THE
NATIONAL GUARD AND PERMITTING THE GRANTING OF
MILITARY LEAVES OF ABSENCE TO MEMBERS THEREC?,
FOR THE PURPOSE 01' ATTENDING THE ANNUAL ENCAMP-
MENT AND ReUESTING eLMILAR COOPERATION WITH
SUCH UNIT ON THE PART 01' THE CITIZENS 07 ALAMEDA,
WHEREAS, this City Council is of the opinion that a
strong and efficient, well-trained National Guard for the protec-
tion of American liberty and principles is in harmony with the
principles upon whioh this Government is founded, and that en-
couragement in all forms should at all times be extended to the
development of such Guard; and
WHEREAS, this Council Is of the further opinion that
the unit in Alaneda, of Com-eerily, D of the 159th Infentry, California
Notional Guard, has proven a credit to themselves and to the City
in which they reside, and that the City Government and people of
Alameda should uae every effort in promoting the effidiefloy of
this organization, and should support it in such efforts as may
be made to augment it's development, mad
WEEREAS, this Council believes that the high state of
efficiency of the local unit may be continued by encouraging
enlistments therein of young men of character and responaibility,
and that this may be done by having the employers and merchants
of Alameda cooperate with the National Guard by granting leaves
of absence to employees beloneing to such organizations for
training purposes, now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED; that the City Council of the City of
Alameda takes this means of asking the employers to encourage
enlistments and membership in the National Guard by granting
leaves of absence to employees who may be members of such organ-
izations during each year, for the purpose of attending annual
field encampments, and that this be clone without jeopardizing
the eositions of such employees, or causing them any finencial
lose in any wee, and further that the employers endeavor to give
preference in employment to euch'emploeees who may be members of
such organization.
BE IT 'FURTHER RESOLVED: that the department heads of
the government of the City of Alameda be and they are hereby
respectfully requested to cooperate in promulgating the above
mentioned plan by encouraging enlistments in the National Guard,
and that the resent action of the State Legislature in requiring
military leaves of absence for employees of State and City for the
purpose of attending such National Guard encempmente is commended,
and that such military leaves shall be grunted to ell employees of
the City of Alameda who may be members of the National Guerd,
BE IT ?URTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk be and he le
hereby directed, to send a co rtified copy of this resolution to
the oommending officer of Comeany D, 159th Infantry, and to the
Adjutant General of the State of Californie.
I, the underaigned, hereby certify that the foregoing
Resolution was duly end regularly introduced and adopted by the
Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the
4th day of Tebruery, 1930, by the following vote, to-wit;
AYES; Councilmen Brodersen, Calcutt, Rennieg, La them and
President Schaefer,(5).
