Resolution 02325RESOLUTION WO. 2325 REQUESTING RESTORATION OF PASSENGER FERRY SERVICE BETWEEN THE CITIES OF ALAKEDA ni,TD SAN FRANCISCO. WHEREAS, rail service over the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge for transportation of commuters from the East Bay region, and partieularly from the City of Alameda, was inaugurated by the Interurban Electric Railway Company on January 15, 1939; and WHEREAS, there bas occurred a serious breakdown of train schedules in the operation by said company of its electric trains from Alameda to San Francisco which has resulted 11, great delays and inconvenience to the commuting public; and WHEREAS, it appears that existing conditions are the result net only of mechanical defects in rolling equipment and lack of coordination of the entire bridge service but also to the failure of mechanical devices and minor mishaps which are likely to reoccur from time to time; and. WHEREAS, the bridge railway facilities are now taxed to capacity during peak hours of travel and it appears that headway between. trains on said bridge during such. peak hours cannot be further reduced with safety, nor can the number of cars constituting each individual train he increased no as to carry all the passengers desiring transportation at such time; and WHEREAS, it is apparent that commuters must of necessity be able to reach their places of employment with some degree ef certainty, and that unless adequate transportation service is immediately restored tha people of the City of Alameda will sustain irreparable damage; and WHEREAS, it appears that the simultaneous abandonment of all ferry service and the inauguration of train service on all interurban lines over said bridge was and is premature; and WHEREAS, it is apparent that the various and varied causes which have contributed to the breakdown at train transportation over said bridge are fundamental 111 nature and not wholly due to minor auses incident to the inauguration of a new service, and that the situation cannot be remedied and normal and adequate service re-established for a period of seme months to come, if et all; NOY: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Alameda, that the appropriate governnental agencies having jurisdiction and the operating carriers be and they are hereby requested to take such immediate action as nay he necessary to the end that passenger ferry service between the cities of Alameda and San Francisco be restored forthwith as an emergency- measure and until such time as adequate and satisfactory transportation service between said cities can be provided. RESOLVED FURTHER that certified copies of this resolution be forwarded forthwith to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, the California Toll Bridge Authority and the Railroad. Commission of the State. of California, and to Hon. Hiram johnssn, Hon. Albert E. Carter, Hen. George P. Miller, Interurban Electric Railway Co. and Key System. I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly introduced and adopted by the Council of the City of Alameda in adjourned regular meeting assembled on the 16th day of January, 1939, by the following vote, to wit: AyES: Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President Weichhart, NOES: None.
