RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA
EXPRESSING OPPOSITION TO AB 1351 (PARTISAN SELECTION
OF CITY ELECTIVE OFFICES).
WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 1351 has been approved by the Committee on Elections
and Reapportionment and submitted to the Assembly of the California State Legislature
for consideration; and
WHEREAS, said Bill would require candidates for city and county office to
stand for election as a member and representative of a political party; and
WHEREAS, elective positions in our local governments have traditionally
been regarded as non-partisan; and
WHEREAS, the introduction of partisan considerations would in no way
improve and in many ways weaken and alter the administration of local government;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA that
the City Council does hereby express its opposition to Assembly Bill 1351 and to any
similar proposal.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this resolution be sent to
our representatives in the State Legislature and to the League of California Cities.

and regularly introduced and adopted by the Council of the City of Alameda in regu-
lar meeting assembled on the 5th day of May, 1959, by the following vote, to wit:
AYES: Councilmen Collischonn, Freeman, Petersen and
President McCall, (4).
NOES: None,
NOT VOTING: Councilman Schacht, (1).
ABSENT: None.
