RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF Till CITY CF ALAMEDA IN MEMORIAM
TO WALTER T. STEINMETZ, RETIRED FIRE CHIEF.
WITH GREAT SORROW, the Council of the City of Alameda records the death of one of its
distinguished and faithful former employees, WALTER T. STEINMETZ, Retired Chief of the Alameda Fire
Department.
WHEREAS, Mr. Steinmetz joined the Volunteer Fire Fighters in 1902, and became a memher
of the official Alameda Fire Department upon its creation in 1909, and, subsequently, in recognition
of his efficient performance of duties and his leadership capabilities, he was appointed in 1912
by the Police and Fire Commission to the position of Fire Chief, in which office he served with
honor to himself and the City until his retirement in 1933; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Steinmetz was responsible for the innovation of installing mechanized
equipment in his department which was the first such great improvement in fire righting in any
city west Of: the Mississippi River; and
WHEREAS, Mr, Steinmetz was highly respected for his administrative proficiency during
his tenure of office and his excellent representation of the City of Alameda in such organizations
as the Veteran Fireman's Association of Alameda County, the Alameda Police and Fire Pension Asso-
ciation and the Pacific Coast Intermountain Fire Chief's Association,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that, In acknowledgement of his many years of outstanding
service to the City of Alameda in his constant efforts toward increasing the citizens' protection
through more efficient techniques of fighting fire and the great spirit of friendly cooperation
and high esteem he engendered in all with whom he worked and associated, the Council of the City
of Alameda hereby expresses its sincere appreciation and gratitude for the valuable personal. influ-
ence exerted by this fine man to the benefit of the commenity.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution he spread in full upon the minutes of this
meeting and that a copy thereof be transmitted to the family of Mr. Steinmetz that it may extend
to its members a sincere expression of sympathy and condolence in their bereavement; and
BE II FURTHER RESOLVED that when this meeting of the Council of the City of Alameda
adjourns, it shall do so in respect to the memory of Mr. WALTER T. STEINMETZ.

introduced and adopted by the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the
19th day of December, 1961, by the following vote, to wit:
