RESUME MAY 1, 1966, AS 'LAW DAY USA',
WHEREAS, the President of the United States by Proclamation has requested the observance
of Sunday, May 1, 1966, as Law Day in the United States, and has urged public bodies, the clergy,
courts, schools, civic and service organizations, the legal profession, and media of information and
entertainment to participate in such observannei and
WHEREAS, the Congress by Joint resolution has designated the first day of May of each year
as Law Day USA, to remind us of the fundamental truth that our liberty, our rights to pursue our
individual destinies, and our very lives are dependent upon oor system of law and independent coort.s;
and
WEEREAS, the theme for Lau Day 1966 -- "Respect the Lau -- it Respects You.' -- is parti-
cularly appropriate, coming at a time when rising crime rates are causing great concern in nil parts
of our society, and this theme emphasizes the three-fold objectives of the annual Law Day 000.100 0,01
(1) To make mors meaningful to Americans -- especially the youth of the nation -- their
heritage of individual freedom under the lama
(2) To foster increased respect for law and the courts which protect the rights of all
cHtizens, and
(3) To emphasize the basic values of the rule of law in the United States.
NOW, THEREFORE, °1 IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL 16 THE CITY 10' ALAMEDA that Sunday, May IT
1966, is recognized and observed in the City of 00 '(1 as Luv, Day USA, with the theme,
'RESPECT THE LAW -- LI RESPECTS YOU"
