MBE:BRAS, the transcontinental railroad has played a prominent role in the development of
CaliTornia and the west and reflects the pioneering and energetie spirit, of our nation,s forebears;
and
WHERHAS, on September 6, 1SAC, tke first pamsenger train to travel the transcontinantal
railroad reached les western terminak in hilameda, marking a significant date in the history of
railroading and, indeed, in the history of the nation7 and
OTIETEAC, the arrival of the wood-horning steam engino, the C. P. Huntington, proedly
pulling ?waive passenger oars, vias 14 4. greeted cy Alamedans with bandy, flags and the

NHEETTAB, the citimens of Alameda are p to celebrate the 100th anniversary of thie
important event with appropriate local festivities and civic celebratiens,
NOW, THEREHORE, ME IT RESOLVED EY THE COUNCIL, 0?' TUE crry OF ALAMEDA that said Council
does hereby urge the Postmaster General of the United. States to issue an appropriately designed stamp
to commemorate the arrival on the West boast of the first passenger train to travel the transcontinental
railway.
BE IT Fa:TITER RESOLVED that all clubs, servihe organizations and individuals interested in
recognizing this significant event in the history of Alameda be encouraged to adopt stmahlar resolutions
requesting issuance of an appropriately designed commemorative stamp.
BE II FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be submitted to Congressman George P. Miller,
the Postmaster General, the national Citizens Btamp Advisory Cmmm_ittee, and appropriate agencies and
indiviPuals concerned with the iasuance of commemorative stamps.
