URGING- COMPLETION OF '1 OF POINT REYES NATIONAL
SEASHORE
WHEREAS, the Point Reyes National Seashore is the only such facility' on the WEst Coast
of the United States; and
WNEREAS, although the Point Reyes National Seashore was authorized by tne Congress of
the United States in 1962, only 22,640 acres out of a total 58,48C acres have been acquired for
park purposes to date; and
WHEREAS, the present park dvnership within the boundary is disjointed. and inoperablE as
a park unit; and
ENIEFEAS, the remaining private lands within the Park's anthoraked boundary are burdpned
by uncertain Federal. intentions of' future acquisition and by rising prices, and also hare been.
subject to constant trespassing by park visitors; and
WHEREAS, existing large privately owned parcels including some of the most valuable poten-
ial park land are Ln imminent danger of being divided into smaller ownerships and developed; and
WHEREAS, the people of the United States have been pramised. the use of this great national
esoirce, and. its preseryatApn is vital to present and future generations of Americans; and
WHEREAS, the present and potential reereational value of the Point Reyes National Seaohcre
may be best '33)3. "c by the more than 600,000 visitors which visit the Spa:it:pre each year;
NOW; THEREFORE, 1. IT RESOLVED that the Council. of the City of Alameda urges the President
of the United States and the 3. .3 administration to do everything within their power to complete
this acquisition project at the earliest possible opportunity.
