CALLING ON PRESIDENT AND CONGRESS OF UNITED STATES TO
ACT THROUGH UNITED NATIONS TO REQUEST INTERNATIONAL
COMMUNITY JOIN IN TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF NUCLEAR
WEAPONS PRODUCTION WHILE SEEKING PERMANENT INTER-
NATIONAL NUCLEAR WEAPONS BAN
WHEREAS, as elected officials, we are alarmed by an in-
political climate that increasingly presents nuclear war
as a "rational" possibility; and
WHEREAS; present medical and scientific evidence shows that
nuclear war, even a "limited" one," would result in death, injury
and disease on a scale unprecedented in human history; and
WHEREAS, medical disaster planning for a nuclear war is
meaningless; since most hospitals would be destroYed, most
medical' personnel dead or injured, most supplies unavailable, and
those who survive initially would eventually die; and
WHEREAS, the economic, ecological; and social fabric on
wh chh human fife depends would be destroyed in the United States,
the Soviet Union and most of the world; and
REAS, worldwide fallout' would contaminate much of the
globe for generations and the- atmospherirc effects would severely
damage all living things;
NOW THEREFORE; BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF ALAMEDA that said Council calls -on the President and the
Congress of the United States to act through the United Nations
to call upon all nations of the world to join in temporary
suspension of nuclear weapons production while seeking a permanent
international nuclear weapons ban.
1, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution
was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the
City of Alameda in an adjourned regular COUnCil meeting assembled
OD the 9th Of July, 1981, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmen Diament, Gorman, he'rratt, Stone, and President Corica - 5.
