ENDORSING THE CONCEPT OF A LOCAL MEMORIAL AND SUPPORT
PROGRAMS FOR ANNUAL RECOGNITION OF THE VIETNAM-ERA
VETERANS
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda is home to over 3,176 Vietnam-
era veterans who selflessly answered the call to duty in defense
of the principles of democracy; and
WHEREAS, the Nation and this City's debt to Vietnam-era
veterans, male and female, remains unpaid; and
WHEREAS, there is the need to establish a program for
the annual recognition of the many contributions of Vietnam-
era veterans and the associated maladies visited upon them as
a result of their participation in one of this Nation's most
bitterly contested and unpopular conflicts; and
WHEREAS, the California Veterans Coalition has identified
three principle areas of primary importance to Vietnam-era
veterans which include economic/business, employment and training
and health care services; and
WHEREAS, the California Veterans Coalition has dedicated
its services and is committed to working with public agencies,
organizations, foundations, business and community groups in
seeking to establish in the City of Alameda a local "memorial"
and associated support programs for recognition of Vietnam-era
veterans as part of Veterans Day ceremonies held each year on
November 11.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF ALAMEDA that said Council fully endorses efforts to establish
a local memorial in honor of Vietnam-era veterans and a program
for annual recognition to be held on Veterans Day;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Alameda, in cooper-
ation with other public agencies, foundations, business and
community groups, will endeavor to work to call attention to
the plight of Vietnam-era veterans and to improve relations between
said veterans and the communities in which they live.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing resolution
was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the
City of Alameda in a regular meeting assembled on the 1st day of
November, 1983, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Gorman, Hanna, Lucas, Monsef and President
Diament - 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
