Resolution 10407CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 10407 SUPPORTING AB 999 AUTHORIZING CITY COUNCILS TO APPROVE CONDUCTING SPECIAL ELECTIONS BY MAIL BALLOT WHEREAS, Assembly Bill No. 999 (Sher, Stirling, Peace) is permissive legislation allowing cities to conduct special elections by mail for the purpose of increasing voter turnout while reducing the costs of the election; and WHEREAS, AB 999 is a logical extension of existing election procedures for absentee ballots and special districts which have had the authority to conduct their elections by mail since 1979; and WHEREAS, experience to date throughout the State suggests that the mail ballot election is a workable, cost-effective procedure to maximize voter participation; and WHEREAS, the City Clerk has estimated a savings of 40% on the costs of conducting a City election; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA that said Council expresses its support of AB 999 which will authorize the conduct of certain special local elections through the use of mailed ballots; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be sent to the Governor of the State of California, The Honorable George Deukmejian, to the authors of the bill, Assemblymen Sher, tc Stirling and Peace, to Assemblyman Elihu Harris and Senator Nicholas C. Petris, and to the League of California Cities. I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and pas-sed by the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the 7th of August, 1984, by the following vote to wit: AYES: COUDc1lme0berJ Gorman, Hanna, Lucas, Monsef and President Diament - 5.
