CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 10437
RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE PORT OF OAKLAND'S PROPOSAL
TO CHANGE THE NAME OF THE BROOKLYN BASIN
WHEREAS, the Port of Oakland has initiated procedures
to change the name of the Brooklyn Basin to Embarcadero Cove;
and
WHEREAS, the Alameda Historical Advisory Commission has
received the proposal to change the name of the Brooklyn Basin
and has determined that:
1. The Brooklyn Basin is largely contained within
the City of Alameda;
2. Brooklyn Basin is the historical name for the portion
of the body of water separating Oakland from Alameda
in the vicinity of Government Island;
3. The name Brooklyn Basin recalls the former township
of Brooklyn on the north side, and has been in
common usage for over 100 years;
4. Both the San Antonio Community District Council and
the Brooklyn neighborhood Preservation Association
are in opposition to the proposed name change; and
5. An inordinate public expenditure would be incurred
in changing maritime and navigational maps and signs
if the proposed name change were approved.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City
of Alameda that said Council has considered the findings of the
Alameda Historical Advisory Commission and hereby expresses its
opposition to the proposed name change for the Brooklyn Basin.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby
authorized and directed to send copies of this resolution to
the U.S. Board of Geographic Names in Reston, Virginia; the
