Resolution 10735CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 10735
REQUESTING REDESIGN OF THE FRUITVALE AVENUE BART
PARKING LOT TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL PARKING SPACES
WHEREAS, the Bay Area Rapid Transit District was created
in 1957 to provide interurban mass rapid transit which would
relieve existing and future traffic congestion on highways in the
Bay Area; and
WHEREAS, a number of Alamedans rely on the BART system to
provide transportation to their points of destination, and
WHEREAS, many Alameda residents would like to use the
Fruitvale BART Station but have found that the lot is full, with
rare exceptions, during daytime hours, and
WHEREAS, a professional examination of the existing
layout of the Fruitvale BART Station parking lot determined that
a significant increase in the number of parking spaces could be
accomplished through a redesign and a reduction in the amount of
space allocated for maneuvering and landscaping, and
WHEREAS, modern design techniques applied by traffic
engineers specializing in parking lot layouts have found that
with the advent and wide use of compact automobiles, less space
is required for parking or maneuvering than was required by
former standards;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City
of Alameda that the City Council finds it within its sphere of
responsibility to bring this matter to the attention of the Bay
