AUTHORIZING ALLOCATION OF FUNDS FROM THE GOLF
COURSE ENTERPRISE FUND FOR MODIFICATIONS OF
PEDESTRIAN/CART BRIDGE ON THE EARL FRY GOLF
COURSE
WHEREAS, the existing 142 ft. x 7 ft. pedestrian/cart
bridge built in the early 1950's provides direct passage from the
fifth tee to the fairway on the Earl Fry Course; and
WHEREAS, over the years, use of motorized golf carts has
become very popular and the size of the carts has gradually
become larger to afford more comfort and safer handling for the
user; and
WHEREAS, the present bridge is showing signs of wear and
is only 52 inches wide with the carts having a 44 inch wide wheel
base leaving minimal clearance between cart tires and handrails;
and
WHEREAS, on numerous occasions carts have scraped the
side of the handrails, causing damage to the rails and carts; and
WHEREAS, after reviewing two alternatives for resolving
the problems with the existing bridge, staff and the Golf
Commission recommend modifying the existing structure to
facilitate current needs; and
WHEREAS, the bridge has been inspected by the City's
Chief Building Inspector and his report states that the basic
structure (piles, caps and stringers) all appear to be sound and
capable of continued use; and
WHEREAS, the required modification can be done by the
golf maintenance staff;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City
,: cc of Alameda that the modifications of the pedestrian/cart bridge
on the Earl Fry Golf Course by in-house staff is hereby approved
and the sum of $17,287 is hereby allocated from the Golf Course
Enterprise Account to fund the purchase of materials for said

the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting
assembled on the 18th of August, 1987,
