Resolution 11289CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 11289
URGING THE CALIFORNIA LEGISLATURE TO SUPPORT
SENATE BILL 181 (LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION AND
RENOVATION BOND ACT OF 1988)
WHEREAS, the Alameda City Council determined on October
16, 1984 and again on August 7, 1985, that the 1902 Carnegie
Building was not to be considered as part of a new library
facility; and
WHEREAS, on February 17, 1987, the City Council approved
the Library Board's recommendation for a new two -level facility
with a minimum footprint of 31,600 square feet; and
WHEREAS, the public library is a supplement to the formal
system of free public education, a source of information and
inspiration to persons of all ages, cultural backgrounds, and
economic statuses, and a resource for continuing education and
reeducation beyond the years of formal education and therefore
deserves adequate financial support from government at all
levels; and
WHEREAS, construction of a facility to meet the city of
Alameda's needs for the next 20 years is estimated to be between
$5 and $6 million; and
WHEREAS, local funds are not sufficient to construct
necessary public library facilities; and
WHEREAS, Senator Barry Keene introduced Senate Bill 181
which would enact the California Library Construction and
Renovation Bond Act of 1988 which, if adopted, would authorize
the issuance pursuant to the State General Obligation Bond Law of
bonds for the purpose of financing a specified library
construction and renovation program.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City
of Alameda that said Council hereby urges the Legislature to
support Senate Bill 181 (Library Construction and Renovation Bond
Act of 1988).
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City City Clerk is
authorized and directed to send copies of this resolution to the
Governor of the State of California, the Honorable George
Deukmejeian, the author of the bill, Senator Barry Keene, the
Chairman of the Assembly Ways and Means Subcommittee No. 5,
Public Employees and Bonded Indebtedness, the Assemblyman
representing the City of Alameda, Elihu Harris, and the Senator
representing Alameda County, Nicholas C. Petris.
1, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing
Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by
the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting
assembled on the 1st of September, 1987,
by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Camicia, Monsef, Thomas and
President Corica - 4.
NOES: Councilmember Haugner - 1.
ABSENT: None.
