Resolution 11491CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 11491
IN SUPPORT OF HOMEPORTING THE U.S.S. MISSOURI IN ALAMEDA
WHEREAS, on July 29, 1987, the Alameda City Council
approved Resolution No. 11259 supporting homeporting the U.S.S.
Missouri in San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos, recently proposed
to the Secretary of the Navy an alternate plan which proposed not
berthing the U.S.S. Missouri in San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda has in past years homeported
four Carriers simultaneously (U.S.S. Enterprise, U.S.S. Coral
Sea, U.S.S. Hancock and U.S.S. Oriskany); and
WHEREAS, N.A.S. Alameda has channels to accommodate the
U.S.S. Missouri with no additional dredging necessary, thus
saving the Navy considerable money and time which would otherwise
be spent dredging in San Francisco waters; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda is proud of its ongoing
w relationship with the Alameda Naval Air Station and has
'*z respected, honored and incorporated the Navy into our community
throughout the years; and
WHEREAS, the homeporting of the U.S.S. Missouri and its
Battle Group in the San Francisco Bay Area would generate
additional employment opportunities and bring millions of dollars
into the Bay Area; and
WHEREAS, during the time that a fact sheet and any
environmental impact statement are being prepared, the City
Council wishes to let the Secretary of the Navy know of
Alameda's interest in homeporting the U.S.S. Missouri.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the
City of Alameda encourages the Secretary of the Navy to seriously
consider homeporting the U.S.S. Missouri in the City of Alameda
and also consider the San Francisco Bay Area as the location to
berth the support fleet.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing
Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by
the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting
assembled on the 21st of June, 1988,
by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Monsef, Thomas and President Corica - 3.
NOES: Councilmembers Camicia and Haugner - 2.
ABSENT: None.
