ESTABLISHING "DRUG FREE ZONES" WITHIN 1,000 FEET OF
ALAMEDA PUBLIC SCHOOLS
WHEREAS, the drug epidemic is rapidly growing in the
City of Alameda, the East Bay and throughout the Nation; and
WHEREAS, the sales of drugs to children is particularly
deplorable in that it is illegal, destroys young lives, has
disastrous effects on families and communities and ultimately the
future of our nation; and
WHEREAS, the United States Code, Sections 845 and 845(A)
of Title 21 provide for enhanced penalties for persons who
distribute drugs to individuals under the age of 21 or who
distribute drugs within 1,000 feet of schools; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda may request through the
U.S. Attorney General's Office Federal prosecution of violators
of Sections 845 and 845(A) of the United States Code.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the
City of Alameda hereby approves of establishing "Drug Free Zones"
within 1,000 feet of public elementary and secondary schools; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that by copy of this resolution
the U.S. Attorney General's Office will be advised of Alameda's
participation in the war against drugs and encourage Federal
prosecution to the maximum extent possible for all drug offenders
violating the City of Alameda's "Drug Free Zones;" and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing
Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by
the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting
assembled on the 2nd day of August, 1988,
by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Camicia, Haugner, Monsef, Thomas
and President Corica - 5
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
