COMMENDING WILVER "WILLIE" STARGELL ON AN OUTSTANDING
BASEBALL CAREER
WHEREAS, "Willie" Stargell grew up in Alameda and lettered in
baseball, basketball and football at Encinal High School, and
WHEREAS, Willie went on play major league baseball for the
Pittsburgh Pirates from 1962 - 1985 compiling an amazing record
of 475 home runs, with 1,540 runs batted in and a career batting
average of .282; and
WHEREAS, Willie led his team to the World Series in 1971 and
1979 and was named the Most Valuable Player in the 1979 World
Series, was named to the Sporting News National League All -Star
Team three times as an outfielder and one time as a first baseman
and was selected to play in seven All -Star games, and
WHEREAS, Willie was only the 17th player in major league
history to be elected to the baseball 'Hall of Fame' on the first
ballot; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Willie found time to devote his services
to youth - oriented community organization.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of
Alameda, friends and admirers in the community and in the Bay
Area extend congratulations on your past outstanding achievements
and wish you continued success for the future.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing
Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by
the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting
assembled on the 20th of September, 1988,
by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Arnerich, Camicia, Monsef, Thomas
and President Corica - 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
