COMMENDING DICK BARTELL ON AN OUTSTANDING BASEBALL CAREER

WHEREAS, Dick Bartell grew up in Alameda and played on the
famous Alameda High School teams of 1925 1927; and
WHEREAS, Dick went on to play for 18 years in the major
leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, New
York Giants, Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers where he played in
more than 2,000 games and compiled a .284 career batting average;
and
WHEREAS, Dick had the honor of being selected as the shortstop
in the first All -Star Game held at Comiskey Park in 1933 and
played with such notables as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx
and many other outstanding players of that era; and
WHEREAS, Dick led his team to the World Series while playing
with the New York Giants in 1936 and 1937 and the Detroit Tigers
in 1940 and served as a major league coach for seven years before
retiring.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of
Alameda, friends and admirers in the community and in the Bay
Area extend congratulations on your outstanding achievements and
wish you continued success for the future.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing
Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by
the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting
assembled on the 20th of September, 1988,
by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Arnerich, Camicia, Monsef, Thomas
and President Corica - 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
