URGING SUPPORT OF PROPOSITION 85
(LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION BOND ACT OF 1988)
WHEREAS, the Library Board and the City Council have
agreed that the Main Library facility is inadequate for present
day use; and
WHEREAS, the public library is a supplement to the formal
system of free public education, a source of information and
inspiration to persons of all ages, races, and economic
backgrounds, a resource for continuing education and re-education
beyond the years of formal education and needs to be preserved
and therefore deserves adequate financial support from government
at all levels; and
WHEREAS, many public library facilities are unsafe,
inaccessible and inadequate to provide needed services to their
communities; and
WHEREAS, the California Library Construction and
Renovation Bond Act of 1988 will appear as Proposition 85 on the
statewide ballot in November 1988 and, if adopted, would create a
grant program to construct and renovate local public libraries;
and
WHEREAS, Proposition 85 is on the ballot to provide 65%
in state funding for library construction and renovation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City
41 of Alameda that said Council hereby supports Proposition 85, the
e California Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act of 1988,
which authorizes the issuance of $75 million in state general
9Dbligation bonds for the purposes of financing a library
construction and renovation program.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is authorized
..?,and directed to send copies of this resolution to Gary Strong,
“State Librarian, and Californians for Community Libraries.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing
Resolution was duly and regularly adopted and passed by
the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting
assembled on the 1st of November, 1988,
by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Arnerich, Camicia, Monsef, Thomas
and President Corica - 5.
NOES: None.
