SUPPORTING ASSEMBLY BILL NO. 1716 RELATING TO
SCHOOLS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF GANG PREVENTION
CURRICULUM
WHEREAS, the number of youth participating in gangs and
gang activities has been steadily rising in the City of Alameda
as well as in other municipalities throughout the State and the
Nation; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Alameda held a
Special Worksession on April 5, 1989, to discuss the increasing
gang activity within the City and the status of efforts
undertaken to curtail the problem; and
WHEREAS, AB No. 1716 recently introduced by Assemblyman Nolan
will require the California Department of Education to develop,
or contract for, the development of a model gang prevention
curriculum, to be made available to school districts and county
offices of education; and
WHEREAS, said Bill will authorize the model curriculum to
be patterned after a specified existing gang prevention program
such as Project DARE; and
WHEREAS, Assembly Bill No. 1716 will appropriate $50,000 to
the State Department of Education for the purpose of developing
the model gang prevention curriculum.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City
Li - - of Alameda hereby supports AB No. 1716 and urges the legislature to
:'.--pass the Bill and to support any and all legislation which will
.Ltassist cities in their attempts to stem juvenile gang activity.

the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting
assembled on the 2nd day of May, 1989,
