COMMENDING SECRETARY OF DEFENSE LES ASPIN'S EFFORTS
TO ACCELERATE BASE CONVERSION AND REUSE
AND TO MAKE ALAMEDA NAVAL AIR STATION AND
ALAMEDA NAVAL AVIATION DEPOT
MODELS FOR CONVERSION AND REUSE
WHEREAS, Alameda Naval Air Station ("NAS Alameda") and
Alameda Naval Aviation Depot ("NADEP Alameda") have been selected
for closure; and
WHEREAS, Les Aspin, Secretary of Defense, has pledged to
work with the City of Alameda to ease the transition from military
to civilian use with emphasis on economic development and job
creation; and
WHEREAS, a five point plan has been announced by the
Clinton Administration to ensure that communities affected by base
closings are given the tools and resource:, to make the transition,
these five points being:
• Job-Centered Property Disposal
• Easy Access to Transition and Redevelopment Help
for Workers and Communities
• Fast-Track Clean-Up
• Transition Coordinators at Major Bases
• Larger Economic Development Planning Grants
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the
City of Alameda, that Secretary of Defense Les Aspin, be commended
for his efforts to ease the base conversion process, and that he
should not go unnoticed by the community in his efforts to make
Alameda Naval Air Station and Alameda Naval Aviation Depot models
for base conversion and reuse.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of
Alameda, that a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Secretary of Defense, Les Aspin, the Department of Defense,
Department of the Navy, NAS Alameda Transition Coordinator, and
NADEP Alameda Transition Coordinator.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify .that the foregoing Resolution
was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the
City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the 17th day of
August , 1993, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Annezzato, Lucas, Roth and
President Withrow - 4.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: Councilman Arnerich - 1,
ABSTENTIONS: None.
