SUPPORTING THE FORMATION OF THE
EAST BAY AIDS FOUNDATION
WHEREAS, citizens of the City of Alameda together with
the citizens of other East Bay communities, are affected by the
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) irrespective of culture,
race, ethnicity, gender and wealth; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda supports creative leadership
and innovative programs to provide the necessary and appropriate
response and services to the HIV infected at risk populations of
the East Bay communities; and
WHEREAS, it is well known that communities acting
collaboratively have demonstrated success in promoting the public
health through organized campaigns against polio, cancer, diabetes,
and other communicable diseases; and
WHEREAS, the joint cooperative efforts and resources of
private citizens and families combined with business and industry,
educational institutions at all levels, local government and non-
profit organizations should be collectively focussed in a dedicated
mission to educate and inform the public about the AIDS effect on
the City of Alameda and East Bay populations; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda supports raising the
community awareness of AIDS preventative actions particularly among
young p.zople; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda supports promoting and
protecting the human rights and dignity of people affected with HIV
and AIDS; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda believes that compassionate
care should be provided to those persons whom the illness has
incapacitated; and
WHEREAS, among the principal goals of the City of Alameda
health programs is to promote spirit of volunteerism, talent and
creativity of its citizens to strengthen AIDS prevention programs
and to combat the prejudice and ignorance that increases exposure
to AIDS;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Alameda
supports the establishment of the East Bay AIDS Foundation, and
that the City of Alameda encourages all other East Bay communities
to join in supporting the establishment of the East Bay AIDS
Foundation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Alameda declares
1994 as the Year of the Healthy Cities AIDS Awareness and
Prevention Campaign.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this
resolution be forwarded to Cecil S. Riley, Executive Director, East
Bay AIDS Foundation.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution
was duly and regularly adopted and passed by the Council of the
City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on the 5th day of
October , 1993, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Appezzato, Arnerich, Lucas, Roth
and President Withrow - 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
ABSTENTIONS: None.
