ENDORSING THE CONCEPT OF A SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA
WATER TRANSIT SYSTEM THAT WOULD ENCOURAGE THE
EXPANSION AND IMPROVEMENT OF
WATER TRANSIT SERVICES IN THE BAY AREA
WHEREAS, the California State Senate has directed the Bay Area Council Blue
Ribbon Task Force to form a regional action plan for water transit on San Francisco Bay for the 2151
Century; and
WHEREAS, the Task Force has issued its report; and
WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bay Area populace has consistently ranked traffic
congestion as the highest or among the highest regional concerns; and
WHEREAS, crossings of the San Francisco Bay represent many of the most
congested traveled corridors; and
WHEREAS, residents of the City of Alameda have enjoyed the considerable benefits
of water transit through the east -end and west -end ferry services, and appreciate the considerable
convenience, beauty, energy efficiency, economic benefits, and emergency importance of water
transit to our community; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda seeks continued improvements along the lines of
the report such as increased frequency, improved facilities, expanded service to wider locations
around the bay area; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda wishes to encourage water transit facilities in other
bay area communities; and
WHEREAS, the realization of expanded and improved water transit facilities will
help to alleviate the automobile traffic congestion and air pollution resulting from automobile traffic.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Alameda hereby endorses the concept of a San Francisco Bay Area Water Transit Authority.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby directed to forward a
Certified copy of this resolution to Sunne Wright McPeak, President, Bay Area Council.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly
adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on
the 3rd day of August , 1999, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Daysog, DeWitt, Kerr and Mayor Appezzato - 4.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: Councilm ember Johnson - 1.
ABSTENTIONS: None.
