COMMENDING RUFINA "PING" MEJIA FOR HER DEDICATION
TO THE STUDENTS OF ALAMEDA AND RECOGNITION FOR
RECEIVING THE AUSPICIOUS TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD
FOR 1999
WHEREAS, Rufina "Ping" Mcjia was a school teacher in the Philippines prior to coming
to the United States; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Mejia worked as a teacher's aid upon first arriving in Alameda; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Mejia was encouraged to pursue her education in the United States and
earned her teaching credential from the Bay Area Bilingual Educators League, and completed her
masters degree in multicultural education in 1991 from the University of San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Mejia taught school in the Alameda Unified School District at Mastick
School, Longfellow School and Alameda Adult School for a total of 21 years service; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Mejia approached teaching as a way of helping people, be they children
or adults; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Mejia is well thought of and respected by her fellow teachers and extended
her career for an extra year to assist limited and non- English speaking students at Longfellow School
under a Federal Grant; and
WHEREAS, upon her retirement, Rufina "Ping" Mejia was honored as the Teacher of the
Year for 1999 by the Alameda Unified School District.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Alameda does
hereby congratulate RUFINA "PING" MEJIA for her 21 years of dedication to both the youth and
adult students of Alameda and recognize her for her commitment and exceptional contributions to
the Alameda Unified School District.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Alameda acknowledges and
commends RUFINA "PING" MEJIA upon receiving the auspicious TEACH OF THE YEAR
AWARD for 1999.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly
adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on
the 16th day of November , 1999, by the following vote to wit:
