URGING ALL ALAMEDANS TO PARTICIPATE IN
CENSUS 2000
WHEREAS, the twenty- second Decennial Census will be taken in the year 2000; and
WHEREAS, the Federal Government uses census numbers to allocate over $185
billion in federal funds annually for community programs and services, education programs,
housing, community development, health -care services for the elderly, job training and much more;
and
WHEREAS, community leaders use the census numbers for planning and allocating
funds for new school construction, public buildings such as libraries, highway safety and public
transportation systems, new roads and bridges, location of police and fire departments and managing
health -care services; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda is interested in the accuracy of Census 2000 to
insure proper political representation, to insure that the municipality receives its fair share of Federal
and State funding, and to provide accurate statistical information insuring a detailed data base for
planning purposes for the next ten years; and
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda has informed the City of Alameda, Complete Count
Task Force to ensure that all Alamedans are counted; and
WHEREAS, Census Day is April 1, 2000.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Alameda that the City of Alameda, in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau, will develop and
implement educational outreach strategies to encourage residents to answer the census, specifically
targeting populations who have been undercounted in the past.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Alameda will work with the U.S.
Census Bureau to provide Census Assistance Centers throughout the City to provide easy access to
Census forms for residents.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Council urge all Alamedans
to be counted in the Census 2000, thus helping to strengthen our community.
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly
adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on
the 7th day of March 2000, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Daysog, DeWitt, Johnson, Kerr and
Mayor Appezzato - 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
ABSTENTIONS: None.
