Resolution 13201CITY OF ALAMEDA RESOLUTION NO. 13201
SUPPORTING THE BUS RIDERS' BILL UP RIGHTS
WHEREAS, at the February Public Transit ` Committee (PTC) meeting, the Committee
received under Oral Communications, a request that the PTC adopt a Bus Riders' Bill of Rights; and
WHEREAS, at the PTC March Meeting the Committee agendized the item and considered
the request; and
WHEREAS bus service for Alameda is primarily provided by AC Transit and surveys
indicate that over 3.2 million rides are made by Alameda passengers using AC Transit each year,
WHEREAS, a large portion of AC Transit's operating funds are provided from property and
sales tax which Alameda residents and employees contribute; and
WHEREAS, residents and employees should be entitled to reasonable performance
standards; and
WHEREAS AC Transit's Mission Statement is "to provide safe, convenient, courteous and
reliable service "; and
WHEREAS; AC Tr snit has reviewed the proposed Bill of Rights and determined that it is
consistent with their own Mission Statement; and
WHEREAS, the PTC at its March r.'eeting recommended it to Council for adoption and also
requested that the Bill of Rights be disseminated to the Community potentially by posting it on-
board all busses,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Alameda
hereby supports the Bus Rider's Bill of Rights as follows:
Bus Rider's have the right to :
1. Courteous competent service at all times.
2. A clean, well - functioning bus.
3. Buses that arrive and depart on time.
4. Be seated, or be holding onto some fixed support.
5. Have the lift or kneeler lowered on request.
6. Be picked up when waiting at a bus stop.
7. Have current bus schedules for that line available on the bus.
8. Hear audible announcements about main cross streets and transfer points
9. Have a procedure for filing a complaint, compliment or suggestion, that is simple,
timely and responsive. This includes information on the bus about this procedure,
together with the necessary forms.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council recommends that the Bus Rider Bill
of Rights be disseminated to the Community potentially by posting it on -board all busses
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a Certified
Copy of this Resolution to AC Transit General Manager and AC Transit Board.

adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in regular meeting assembled on
the 4th day of April , 2000, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Daysog, DeWitt, Johnson, Kerr and
Mayor Appezzato - 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
ABSTENTIONS: None.
