HONORING VETERANS OF THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES BY
AUTHORIZING THE DISPLAY OF THE POW/MIA FLAG AT THE VETERANS
BUILDING ON CENTRAL AVENUE
WHEREAS, the City of Alameda owns property located at 2203 Central Avenue,
which houses a variety of Veteran's organizations, and a City -owned flag pole is located
in front of the Central Avenue property; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Alameda has received a request from
the Alameda County Veterans Affairs Commission to display the POW /MIA flag on the
flagpole in front the Central Avenue property to honor our veterans, including those who
have been prisoners of war or are missing in action; and
WHEREAS, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is the third Friday of
September each year.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Alameda that said Council hereby finds that display of the POW/MIA flag on the City -
owned flag pole located in front of 2203 Central Avenue, is appropriate to honor our
veterans, and particularly, to remember those veterans who have been prisoners of war or
who are missing in action, and that such authorized use of the City -owned flag pole does
not create a public forum.
BE IN FURTHER RESOLVED that the POW /MIA flag of the National League
of Families may be displayed on the flagpole located at 2203 Central Avenue on the
following nationally recognized dates:
• National POW/MIA Recognition Day
• Armed Forces Day
• Memorial Day
• Flag Day
• Independence Day
• Veterans Day
I, the undersigned, hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly
adopted and passed by the Council of the City of Alameda in a regular meeting assembled on the 6`h
day of May, 2003, by the following vote to wit:
AYES: Councilmembers Daysog, DeWitt, Kerr, Matarrese, and Mayor
Johnson - 5.
NOES: None.
ABSENT: None.
ABSTENTIONS: None.
