1986-01-08 Special CC MinutesSPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA HELD WEDNESDAY JANUARY 8, 1986 The meeting convened at 12 Noon with President Diament presiding. ROLL CALL: Present: Absent: Councilmembers Corica, Hanna, Lucas, and President Diament - 4. Councilmember Monsef - 1. 86-030 - Presentation by the St. Francis Yacht Club of San Francisco on the 1987 America's Cup Race. President Diament stated that holding the America's Cup Race in the Bay Area is an exciting concept, and will require the support of the Council, yacht clubs, and water-oriented businesses. Mr. William Kirkland described the Encinal Yacht Club's proposal. Mr. John Beery spoke in support of the ideas and proposals which the St. Francis Yacht Club offered. Mr. Ross stated that the Aeolian Yacht Club is interested in fund raising for the event. Mr. Ron Young, co-General Manager of the St. Francis Golden Gate Challenge, provided a promotional video presentation. Mr. Young also described the various scheduled fund raising events, and encouraged Alameda to become a sponsor. Councilmember Hanna inquired about the construction and ownership of the boats, and stated that the main economic advantage will be where the boats are moored. Councilmember Lucas commented that the Encinal Yacht Club would most likely take the leadership in promoting participation of other yacht clubs and businesses. Councilmember Lucas moved, seconded by Councilmember Corica, to endorse the proposal. The motion carried by the following vote: Ayes: Councilmembers Diament, Corica, and Lucas - 3. Noes: Councilmember Hanna - 1. Absent: Councilmember Monsef - 1. Councilmember Hanna explained that he would like more information on the subject, and an evening meeting should be scheduled so that representatives of marine businesses and the industry could be present. 13 Councilmember Corica stated that he believes the City should act quickly, however, more information should be made available for review by the Council. After further Council discussion, President Diament emphasized the importance of having all the Alameda yacht clubs participate and adjourned the meeting. Respectfully submitted, Di e B.
