1986-01-30 Special CC MinutesSPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA HELD THURSDAY JANUARY 30, 1986 The meeting convened ROLL CALL: Present: Absent: at 7:30 p.m. with President Diament presiding. Councilmembers Hanna, Lucas, Monsef and President Diament - 4. Councilmember Corica - 1. 86-062 Presentation by Yacht Clubs and Marina Industries supporting the America's Cup Challenge. Commodore Bailey,Island Yacht Club; Gene Vick, Secretary, Alameda Yacht Club; and Tom Rossi, Aeolian Yacht Club, stated support for the St. Francis Golden Gate Challenge. June Stratford, Chamber of Commerce, expressed the Chamber's interest in supporting the event, which she believes will be good for Alameda business. Susan Shelley, representative of Diana Sailing Company and Jack Barr Yacht Sales, commented that she has a strong interest in raising funds in order to keep the America's Cup in Alameda. Mr. Ron Young, St. Francis Yacht Club, San Francisco, provided a video presentation for both Council and the audience. Mr. William Kirkland, President, Encinal Yacht Club, reaffirmed the Encinal Yacht Club's interest and reviewed the proposal. Terry Iverson, Rear Commodore, Encinal Yacht Club, also explained the proposal. Mr. Irve Hamilton, representative of the Bayside City Group, stated that the event will bring greater visibility to Alameda and generate revenue. In response to inquiry from Councilmember Lucas, Mr. Ron Young informed the Council that the St. Francis Yacht Club was impressed with the Encinal Yacht Club's proposal which will go before the St. Francis Yacht Club's Board. In response to inquiry from Councilmember Monsef, Mr. Young stated that the video would be edited to highlight the East Bay more. In response to inquiry from the City Manager, Mr. Iverson stated that assistance from the City would be in the form of traffic control and Police boats. Reverend Hodgkin suggested that the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Sea Scouts participate in the event. Mr. Kirkland stressed that timing is important, and requested Council to reaffirm their support. 24 Councilmember Hanna stated that he had read the Encinal Yacht Club proposal carefully and believes that the proposed event is a fine idea. Councilmember Hanna made a motion that the City of Alameda endorse the Challenge as presented by the St. Francis Golden Gate Challenge. Councilmember Monsef seconded the motion, which carried by unanimous voice vote - 4. (Note: Councilmember Corica was absent from the meeting, however, endorsed the event at the Special Council Meeting held on January 8, 1986.)
