1964-05-13 Regular CC MinutesADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA
HELD WEDNESDAY EVENING MAY 13, 1964
The meeting reconvened at 7:15 o'clock p.m. in Alameda High School Auditorium with President
Godfrey presiding. The President announced that this meeting was a continuation of the Hearing in
the matter of the Redevelopment Plan - "Park Centre Project ".
ROLL CALL:
Councilmen Freeman, La Croix, Jr., McCall, Rose and President Godfrey, (5), were noted present.
Absent: None.
HEARINGS:
1/ A stenotype operator was present to officially record the proceedings of this meeting and the
transcript thereof is, by reference, made a part of the minutes of s aid meeting.
2. The following persons addressed the Council in opposition to the "Project ": Mr. Robert McPeak,
representing., "TOWN HALL "; C. H. McCaslin, President of the Apartment House Association of Alameda
County; Mrs. Inez Kapellas, representing "Citizens Committee for Preservation of Property Rights ".
Certain documents were filed by Mr. McPeak and Mrs. Kapellas and were marked in evidence as .follows:
Exhibit No. 13 - Slides - showing "Vallejo ", "Mountain View" and "Sunnyvale" Redevelopment
Projects and Scenes of Alameda.
Exhibit No. 14 - Articles of Incorporation, "Doric Properties, Inc."
Several people then spoke in favor of the proposed Park Centre Project, as follows: Messrs. Michael
Tilles, Chairman of the Citizens Advisory Committee for Community Improvement; Wesley F. Suman,
President of Alameda Chamber of Commerce; Raoul Blanquie, member of "FACT" organization. Also, the
following .individual businessmen addressed the Council in support of this redevelopment program:
Messrs. Elliot S. Peterson, Saylor's Chocolates; Walter Ansel, Walt's Menshop; Ian Weber, Dorothy's;
Ralph Archinal, Typewriters; Elmer E. Tilton, Barker - Tilton Furniture Company; and Donald Brugge,
representing certain employees on Park Street.
President Godfrey then announced that the meeting would recess until Monday evening, May 18, 1964,
at 8:00 o'clock, in Alameda High School Auditorium, at which time the Public Hearing would continue.
