HELD MONDAY EVENING MAY 18, 1964
The meeting convened at 8:00 o'clock p.m. in Alameda High School Auditorium with Vice President
McCall presiding temporarily. This was for the continuation of the Hearing in the matter of the
Redevelopment Plan - "Park Centre Project".
ROLL CALL:
Councilmen La Croix, Jr., Rose and Vice President McCall,-(3), were noted present. Absent:
Councilman Freeman and President Godfrey, (2). President Godfrey arrived later in the meeting and
assumed the Chair.
HEARINGS:
1. A stenotype operator was present to officially record the proceedings of this meeting and the
transcript thereof is, by reference, made a part of the minutes of said meeting.
2. The following persons addressed the Council as proponents of the question: Messrs. Hart S.
Smith, 1231 Mound Street; John E. Gadsden (Gadsden's Stationers), 1309 East Shore Drive; Gordon
Justus (Western Meat Market), 4000 Fairway Avenue, Oakland; Charles H. Price, 1254 -A Broadway;
James B. Davis, Attorney, 2225 Otis Drive; Walter Nyland, 1330 Bay Street; and Dr. Phillip T.
Durfee, 2157 Encinal Avenue, on 'behalf of Alameda Junior Chamber of Commerce. John R. Fonvergne
stated he had planned to speak in favor of this issue but, after having heard some of the points
made, he had decided to wait before committing himself.
A number of people then spoke in opposition to the proposed program, as follows: Messrs.
Robert Bourgeois, 2318 Central Avenue; Boyd Bisbee, 1611 Bay Street; Adolph Adragna (Co- Manager,
Alameda Drug Company), 3108 Windsor Drive; Joseph Selby (Bell Cleaners and owner of apartment house
at 2410 Lincoln Avenue), 15131 Park Street; Thomas F. Reiser, Attorney, 3019 Bayo Vista Avenue;
Jack Eelsing, 1626 Foley Street; Ina and Frank A. Ratto, 1614 Benton Street; Mesdames J. M.
Tucker (Tucker's Ice Cream), 1518 High Street; Helen Larson, 1259 St. Charles Street; Messrs.
David Garfinkle, 1171 Park Avenue; Maynard J. Beckie, 1214 Oak Street; Adam P. Ornellas, 1535
Everett Street; and Charles A. Russell, 1021 Regent Street.
Mr. Joseph Selby filed a certain document on behalf of the organization, "TOWN HALL ", which was
marked in evidence as follows:
Exhibit No. 15 - Questionnaire -poll of businessmen in the "Project" area concerning its
method of redevelopment.
President Godfrey then announced that the meeting would recess until Thursday evening, May 21, 1964,
at 8:00 o'clock, in Alameda High School Auditorium, at which time the Public Hearing in this matter
would continue.
