From Mrs. Anne Martinson, making application for a permit to operate a
jitney service in the City of Alameda, including 7 v Farm island.
Councilman Osborn moved this matter be referred to the City Nanager. The motion
was seconded by Councilman Sweeney and unanimously carried.
0. A petition was presented, requesting the City Council to enact an ordinance
prohlbiting smoking on busses.
President Branscheid stated that inasmuch as this Matter was presently under
consideration and study by the Council and City Manager, with particular regard
Lo Inc possibility Of other East Bay cities enacting smnitaneously a similar
ordinance, the communication would be referred. to the file being compiled on
the subject.
4, broLi Henry R. Bilodeau, Jr., requesting permission to construct a small
wooden building at Inc southeast corner of Santa Clara Avenue and Webster Street
to be used as a news stand.
This matter was referred to the city Manager for study and report.
OPENING OF BIDS:
5. No bids were received on Inc 001y T5 call for furnishing as Iron Fittings
and Appurtenances for the Bay Farm Island Interceptor Sewer, in, accordance with
Specifications and Provisions therefor, No MS 3-43-4.
Councilman Osborn moved the City Manager be authorized to -purchase this material
in the open market. The metion was seconded by Councilman. Anderson and on roll
call carried by the following vote. Ayes : Councilmen Anderson, Osborn Sweeney
and President flranscheid, (4). Noes: None. Absent : Councilman Jones, (1).
REPORTS OF CONEITTEES:
6:' From the Mayor, City Manager and City Auditor, Submitting their report on
the Count of Money, held March 3, 1948, showing there was under control of the
City Treasurer the amount of '4,265,589.66, the sum. which, according to the
And records, should have at that time been in the City Treasury.
The report was ordered filed.

grom Acting City M anager Froerer, recommending the work be accepted and the
Notice of Completion ordered filed, concerning the contract for the reconstruction
of Park Street from. Otis Drive to the Tidal Canal.
Councilman Sweeney moved Yr. Froerer's recommendation be followed; that the work
be accepted and Notice of Completion filed. The motion was seconded by Council-
man Anderson and unanimously carried.

Councilman Osborn mcved the bills as Itemized in the List of Claims filed with
the City Clerk on Farch 1, 1042, and presented to the Council at this time, be
allowed and paid. The notion was seconded by Councilman Anderson and on roll
call carried by the following vote. Ayes: Councilmen Anderson, Osborn, Sweeney
and President Branscheld, (4)% :one. Absent: Councilman Jones, (1).
19. Prior to adjournment, Councilman Sweeney stated that on April 5, at L',:00
o'clock P. LL, the Fla; Day and Centennial Committee and representatives Of
some 200 organizations, will meet in the Council Chamber with Dr. Paden present
to explain in detail the Centennial celebration plan and the manner in which
the City 02 Alameda might participate in the funds which have been made avail-
able by the State for this celebration.
He expressed the hope that members of the City. Council and interested citizens
would be present on that occasion to acquaint themselves with.. this situation.

20. President Dranscheid stated it would be necessary at this time to make the
appointment of a representative of the City to the Executive Committee of the
East Bay Division, Lea6ue of California Cities.
Councilman Osborn moved the City Clerk be appointed as the City's representative
for the meeting to be held ilarch 17. The motion was conded by Councilman
Sweeney and unanimously carried.
21. President Branscheid announced that immediately following adjournment,
motion pictures would be shown by the Fire Department, dealing with the sub-
jects of training, fire prevention and other details of lire Department activity.
