1941-03-04 Regular CC MinutesREGULAR MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALAMEDA HELD TUESDAY EVENING, MARCH 4 1941 The meeting convened at 8:01 o'clock P. M. with President Weichhart presiding. ROLL CALL: The roll was called and Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President Weichhart, (5), were noted present. Absent: None. MINUTES: 1. The minutes of the regular meeting of February 18, 1941, were approved as transcribed. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS: 2. From the Alameda County Taxpayers' Association, Inc., enclosing statistics on the cost per person for municipal government and a copy of news release for publication. On request of Councilman Morris, the City Clerk was instructed to express appreciation in writing to the Association for its good work. There being no objections, the com- munication was ordered filed. 3. From the Postal Central Council of Alameda County, submitting resolution concern- ing firemen being allowed to take leaves of absence without pay to serve as firemen in the various Army and Navy Bases. There being no objections, the communicationwas ordered filed. V 4. From Mr. C. C. Howard, offering to lease from the City of Alameda all its property lying adjacent to the Alameda Mole, more particularly being that portion lying west of the jog in the new fence line of the Naval Base. There being no objections, this mat- ter was referred to the Committee of the Whole. 5. From William F. Weihs, submitting list of property for sale by the Capital Company Oakland, known as "1515-17A-171-21-27.1-29-31-35-35-2 Oak Street, Alameda. West line Oak Street 207.66' North of Santa Clara Avenue", for the price of $9,250. This matter was referred to the Committee of the Whole. v/ 6. From the Alameda County Taxpayers' Association, Inc., regarding pensions of Muni- cipal employees who have been discharged for good and sufficient cause. From the City Clerk, declaring the sufficiency of referendum petition entitled, rendum Petition Protesting Passage of Ordinance No. 742 of the City of Alameda", in the office of the City Clerk, February 17, 1941. The communication was ordere 1. From the Public Utilities Board, attaching a letter from the American Red Cross, :sting free electricity be given that organization at 2033 Central Avenue. As the Council has no authority to donate free electric power, the City Clerk was re- •ed to so notify the American Red Cross in writing. The City Manager stated at this point he wished the Council's approval of the al plan for the improvement of Webster Street which is now being made and approved e Division of Highways. The street will be widened six feet on each side, from egregation Line running north to, and around to the rear of, Posey Tube entrance” g six twelve-foot lanes with a four-foot division in the center. The whole road ill be raised approximately three feet. Funds for this improvement will come out e first 1/4 cent gas tax money. Councilman Carrington called attention to the fact that the City _rig Board had some time ago submitted a plan for planting trees and shrubbery Webster Street. However, this recommendation had been set aside until the im- tent of Webster Street had been completed.
