HELD TUESDAY EVENING, MAY 5, .. 1942
The meeting convened at 8:00 p. m. with President Godfrey presiding.
ROLL ALL:
The roll was called and Councilmen Branscheid, Jones, Maurer and. President Godfrey,
(4), were noted present. Absent: Councilman Howe, (1).
MINUTES:
1. ' The minutes of the regular meeting held April 21, 1942, and the adjourned regular
meeting held. April 28, 1942, were approved as transcribed.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS:

2. From the East Bay Division of the League of California Cities, giving notice of the
next bi-monthly dinner meeting to be held in Berkeley, May 15, 1942, at 7:00 p. m.
Mayor Godfrey urged all who could to attend and requested the City Manager to make
arrangements for the necessary reservations.
3. From the State of California Veterans' Welfare Board, enclosing petition requesting
cancellation of certain taxes appearing on the tax records of this City as a lien against
property owned by this Board, taxes being assessed to J. D. and. Flori D. Jardine.
There being no.objections, the matter was referred to "Resolutions".
ORAL 001,,FiviUNICATIONS:
4. The City Manager reported on the contemplated drastic curtailment of street and
highway construction throughout the State of California and referred to regulations now
being negotiated by the Street and. Highway Committee of the League of California Cities
which is working with the State Highway Department in this regard.
NEW BUSINESS:

5. Councilman Branscheid presented a motion that the Alameda Housing Authority be
requested to make a survey of the available vacant property sites in Alameda that would
be suitable for defense housing purposes and estimating, if possible, the number of
acres these various sites would comprise. The motion was seconded by Councilman Maurer
and unanimously carried.
6. Councilman Jones brought to the attention of the Council the drive which is now in
progress for funds for the United China Relief, of which committee he and Councilman
Branscheid are members, and moved that the Council officially endorse this drive and
urge the citizens of Alameda to give their utmost support to this worthy endeavor. The
motion was seconded by Councilman Branscheid and unanimously carried.
Mayor Godfrey requested the Clerk to see that publicity is given to the newspapers
regarding this action.
RESOLUTIONS:
7. The following resolution was introduced by Councilman Maurer, who moved its
adoption:
'Resolution No. 2740
Cancelling City Taxes on Real Property Acquired by the
Veterans' Welfare Board of the State of California."
The motion to adopt said resolution was seconded by Councilman Jones and on roll call
carried by the following vote. Ayes: Councilmen Branscheid, Jones, Maurer and
President Godfrey, (4). Noes: None, Absent: Councilman Howe, (1). Thereupon the
Mayor declared said resolution duly adopted and passed.

street lights be installed in Fernside Tract.
From City of Oakland, re plans for alleviating congestion
in vicinity of Posey Tube.
From C. C. Howard, re leasing from City certain property
adjacent to Alameda Mole.
From Alameda Golf Commission, re proposed. Golf Course on Bay Farm
Island. (Never presented at a Council meeting).
From Lincoln-Versailles Dads' Club, enclosing resolution petitioning
Council to establish Municipal Swimming Pool.
From Tax Collector, County of Alameda, re delinquent taxes on certain
property in City, assessed to T. B. Heller.
From S. C. 'Wright, re acquisition of swimming pool and beach at
Neptune Gardens.
From Executive Committee of Health, Recreation and. Related. Activities,
National Defense, re use of lot adjoining City Hall on Oak Street
for service work.
From Pillsbury, Madison & Sutra, Attorneys, re cancellation of City
taxes on portion of Lars A. Pedersen Estate.
From William J. McCracken, Councilman of Oakland, re adoption of
resolution requesting East Bay Municipal Utility District to
furnish additional water during summer months without cost.

BILLS:
10. The following claim against the Initiative Relief Fund in the amount of $22.00
was presented to the Council:
Councilman Maurer moved the bill and claim against the City in the amount listed in
the List of Claims filed with the City Clerk on May 5, 1942, and presented to the
Council at this meeting, be allowed and paid. The motion was seconded by Councilman
Branscheid and on roll call carried by the following vote. Ayes: Councilmen
Branscheid, Jones, Maurer and President Godfrey, (4). Noes: None. Absent:
Councilman Howe, (1).
ADJOURNMENT:
. 11. There being no further business to transact, the Council adjourned to assemble
in regular session on Tuesday evening, May 19, 1942, at 8:00 p. m.
