HELD TUESDAY EVENING, JANUARY 17th 1939
The meeting convened at 8:05 o'clock P.M. with President Weichhart presiding.
The roll was called, and Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and Pres-
ident Weichhart, (5), were noted present. Absent: None.
WINUTES:
The minutes of the regular meeting of January 3rd, 1939, were approved as trans-
cribed.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS:
,l. From Ransome Company requesting permission to improve Fillmore Street between
Mound Street and its westerly termination by private contract. The request was referred
to the City Manager and the City Attorney.
/2. From the Washington-Longfellow-Hastick Dads' Club, requesting that the new park
located at Lincoln Avenue and Linden Street be named "Longfellow Park". The communica-
tion was referred to the Committee of the Whole.
t3. From Alameda Council Boy Scouts of America, thanking the City Council for use of
the Headquarters Office in the City Hall and also the City Council and all City personnel
for the help extended to its organization. The communication was ordered filed.
v74. From M. J. Klein, Chairman National Public Links Representative Committee, request-
ing a donation of 200.00 for the expenses of a representative of the municipal golf
course to attend the National Public Links Championship Tournament to be held in
Baltimore, Haryland. The communication was referred to the Committee of the Whole, and
the City Attorney was requested to give the Council an opinion as to whether such a
donation would be legal.
5. Mr. Frank Osborn addressed the Council, recommending that the above request be
granted.
6. From R. A. Wondolleck, in reference to the present methods of transportation over
the Bay Bridge, and requesting that some engineer be hired to test the Fruitvale Avenue
Bridge for its stability and carrying capacity. After the City Manager had informed
the Council that within the last three months a very complete examination of the bridge
and its foundations had been made, and, that it was found to be safe for the present
traffic by both the County of Alameda and the United States War Department. The com-
munication was ordered filed.
7. From James Howard, in reference to traffic over the Bay Bridge, and the present
train schedule. The communication was ordered filed.

V8. Frank Gottstein addressed the Council in reference to the present train transporta-
tion to San Francisco over the Bay Bridge. The following also addressed the Council on
the same subject: C. C. Howard, C. A. Curtis, Jack Walker, Hans Holmes, Wallace Yeracle,
W. R. Calcutt and Supervisor Harry Bartell. After the Mayor had addressed the assemblage
and expressed the intention of the Council to take such action possible to remedy the
situation, Councilman Morris moved that when the C amen adjourns, it do so to meet
in adjourned regular session on Wednesday evening, January 18, 1939, at 8 o'clock P.M.

None. Absent: None,
REPORTS OF COI=TTEES:
From the City Manager, referring to correspondence received from the Interurban
Electric Railway Company and the Southern Pacific Company, granting permission to use
certain piling located at the Southern Pacific Company's Alameda Kole, and, informing
the Council that he and the City Engineer had examined the piling and it is their
belief that it is not fit for use on account of its rotted condition. The communica-
tion was ordered filed.
/10. From the Public Utilities Board, informing the Council of the installation of
temporary lights on the existing poles on the east side of Broadway between Otis and
La Jolla Drives. The communication was ordered filed.
/11. From the City Planning Board, recommending to the Council the reclassification
of property known as 1194 - 9th Street, from Residential District, Class I, to
Residential District, Class 1 3/4. Councilman Godfrey moved that the recommendation be
adopted, seconded by Councilman Carrington and on roll call carried by the following
vote: Ayes: Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President Weichhart,
(5). Noes: None. Absent: None.

43. Councilman Morris moved that the Public Utilities Board be requested to secure
estimate of the cost of installing new lighting facilities at the intersections at Santa
Clara Avenue, seconded by Councilman Carrington and on roll call carried by the following
vote: Ayes: Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President Weichhart, (5).
Noes: None. Absent: None.
14, Councilman GoCfrey moved that the City Manager be requested to take steps to see
that no action be taken by the Southern Pacific Company to make changes to the present
buildings at the Alameda Mole, seconded by Councilman Morris and on roll call carried by
the following vote: Ayes: Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President
Weichhart, (5). Noes: None. Absent: None.
15. S. L. Folmes addressed the Council in reference to installing street signs at the
intersections along Park Street.
RESOLUTIONS:
16. Councilman Carrington, introduced and moved the adoption of
"Resolution No. 2319
Requesting Civil Service Board to Exempt Position
of "Personnel Technician" from the Civil Service
of the City of Alameda",
Councilman Maurer seconded the motion, and on roll call carried by the following vote:

Councilman Maurer moved, seconded by Councilman Carrington that the claims and bills
against the City in the amounts as listed and itemized in the List of Claims filed with
the City Clerk on Zahuary 17, 1939, and presented to the Council at this meeting be allow-
ed and paid. On roll call this motion carried by the fol.lowing vote: Ayes: Councilmen
Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President Weichhart, (5). Noes: None. Absent:
None.
29. There being no further business to transact, the Council adjourned to meet in
adjourned regular session on Wednesday evening, January 18, 1939, at 8 o'clock P.M.
