HELD WEDNESDAY EVENING, JANUARY l8th 1939
The meeting convnned at 8 o'clock P.M. with President Weichhart presiding.
The roll was called, and Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and Pres-
ident Weichhart, (5), were noted present. Absent: None.
1. The Mayor read copy of a telegram sent ny the City Manager to Reconstruction Finance
Corporation, Governor Culbert L. Olson, the Honorable Albert E. Carter, Senator Hiram
Johnson and the Honorable George P. Miller, pointing out the complete breakdown in
train schedules and intolerable and deplorable transportation conditions in ,ilameda,
and urging some immediate remedy. The Mayor also informed the assemblage that a tele-
phone request had been received from Sacramento for the City Manager to proceed there
immediately in order to confer with the State authorities.
2. The Mayor read a letter from the City Manager, reouesting permission to absent him-
self from this meeting, as it was imperative that he leave for Sacramento to confer with
Assemblyman George P. Miller, the Lieutenant Governor and members of the Toll Bridge
Authority.
RESOLUTIONS:
3. Councilman Godfrey introduced and moved the adoption of
"Resolution No. 2325
Requesting Restoration of Passenger Ferry Service
between the Cities of Alameda and San Francisco."
Councilman Maurer seconded the motion, and on roll call carried by the following vote:
Ayes: Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and President Weichhart, (5). Noes:
None. Absent: None.
The City Clerk was requested to forward a copy of the resolution to the Board of Super-
visors in addition to the persons and organizations named in the resolution. Councilman
Godfrey renuested that the copies be forwarded by airmail.
'4. The Council was addressed by a number of persons in the audience, recommending im-
provements in the transportation service, including the establishment of a municipal
car line and ferry service. The Mayor responded to some criticisms which had been aimed
at him and the Council, explaining the efforts which had been expended to cure the
transportation situation, and for the benefit of the City in other directions.
5. There being no further ,business to transact, the Council adjourned to mcet in
adjourned regular session on Tuesday evening, January 24, 1939, at 8 o'clock P.M.
