EELD TUESDAY EVENING, JANUARY 24th 1939 •
The meeting convened at 8:03 o'clock P.M. with President 'feichhart presiding.
The roll was called, and Councilmen Carrington, Godfrey, Maurer, Morris and
President Weichhart, (5), were noted present. Absent: None.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS:
/1. The City Manager read and presented to the Council a communication outlining the
procedure that had been undertaken in an endeavor to improve the traffic conditions
between Alameda and San Francisco over the Bay Bridge. The communication was ordered filed.
2. From the Alameda Chamber of Commerce extending an invitation to the Council
to attend a civic dinner and annual meeting to be held January 25th,1939, at Hotel
Alameda. The communication was ordered filed.
3. From H. A. 'Wallace, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Washington D.C..
requesting that the Council tale steps to place before the people at the coming elec-
tion on March 14, 1939, the question of giving an additional area of approximately 35
acres on Government Island to the United States Government. After the Council had been
addressed by Capt. Brown, custodian of the Government area on the Island and. Councilman
Morris had expressed his views concerning the necessity of presenting to the people of
Alameda information concerning the property involved, Councilman Morris moved that the
public be invited to attend an adjourned regular meeting of the Council to be held
on Monday evening, January 30, 1939, at 8 o'clock P.M. to discuss the subject, seconded
by Councilman Carrington and unanimously carried.
ORAL COTT,UNICATIONS:
4. After the Mayor had addressed the assemblage, Mr. Frank Gottstein asked for and
was granted permission to answer certain charges which had been mare against him.
5. Mr. Otto Futterer addressed the Council in reference to transportation, as did. Mr.
Reece, C. C. Howard, E. W. N. Bowes, John O'Dea and others.
/6. Mr. R. B. Rogers addressed the Council on the question of automobiles speeding on
south Park Street. The City Manager was requested to make an investigation in conjunc-
tion with the Chief of Police and take steps to remedy the condition, if it exists.
7. There being no further busines s to transact, the Council adjourned to meet in
adjourned regular session on Monday evening, January 30, 1939, at 8 o'clock P.M.
