HELD TUESDAY EVENING .. MARCH 20,1934.
The meeting convened at 8 o'clock with President Murray presiding.
The roll was called and. Councilmen Bruzzone, Eschen, Morris Tiedemann and. Presi-
dent Murray (5) were noted present. Absent: None.
The minutes of the regular meeting of March 6th,: 1934, were approved as read.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS:
vil.V( A communication from Howard S. Hill, requesting a temporary permit to conduct an
automobile repair shop at 2258 Santa Clara Avenue. On motion of Councilman Eschen,
seconded by Councilman Morris and unanimously carried, the Clerk was instructed to post
the required notices, and the request was referred to the City Planning Commission for
their recommendation.
172. V A petition from various property owners to re-route traffic approaching the Fruit
vale Bridge, and to cause the Southern Pacific, Alameda Belt Line and. Western Pacific
Railways to pave their right-of-way to form a continuation of Clement Avenue into Fern-
side Boulevard. After the City Manager had informed the Council that this would neces-
sitate action by the State Railroad. Commission and a possible expense of $25,000.00,
on motion of Councilman Eschen, seconded by Councilman Bruzzone and unanimously carried,
the petition was denied.
/3./ From the Postal Central Council, calling the Council's attention to a recent order
from the Post Office Department, for compelling a one-day furlough per month without
pay for postal employees. The communication was, without objection, ordered filed.
/4. V' From the City Manager, informing the Council that the Otis Drive fill from Mound
Street to the_Bridge at Peach Street has been completed, and that the'High Street fill
from Otis Drive north to Washington Street is under construction as a C.W.A. project.
The communication was ordered filed.
e/5. From the City Manager, in reference to a petition presented to the Council on
March 6, protesting the locality of a sign on the corner of Oak Street and Lincoln
Avenue, informing the Council that the sign has been located in various places in -the
same lot for several years; that Fbster-&Kleiser COmpany pays a rental-to the owner
of the lot and, inasmuch as Ordinance No. 370, New Series, permits signboards within
the City, it would seem that the owners of the sign are within their rights in main-
taining it. On motion of Councilman Eschen, seconded by Councilman Bruzzone and unan-
imously carried, the petition was denied.
v 6.V From the Board of Public Utilities, inclosing a letter from the Boy Scouts of
America, requesting the Board of Public Utilities to absorbe charges for electricity
used by the Sea Scouts at the foot of Hawthorne Street, recommending to the Council
that the request be denied, to avoid establishing a pfgotledent. On motion of Council-
man Eschen, seconded by Councilman Morris and unanimously carried, the recommendation
of the Board of Public Utilities was adopted, and the communication referred to them
with that information.
v7./ From the Taxpayers' League, presenting a resolution that all automobiles owned
by the City of Alameda and the Board of Public Utilities be monogramed with gold
letters, designating the City of Alameda. The communication was ordered filed.
v/8„V From the Taxpayers, League, including copy of a resolution adopted by that
organization in reference to collection of a franchise tax from the Pacific Gas and.
Electric Company, and was ordered filed,
y- 9.y From Mrs. J. Harry Goetz, informing the Council that a charge of $1.50 had bees
made by the City for cleaning weeds on her property, which work had previously been
performed by her husband. The communication was, without objection, referred to the
City Engineer for investigation.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
10/ Only one bid having been received for the construction of tennis courts in
Franklin Park, the opening of bids was deferred, upon motion of Councilman Eschen,
seconded by Councilman Morris, and unanimously carried.
RESOLUTIONS:
Y 11. Councilman Bruzzone introduced and moved the adoption of
"Resolution No. 1830
Transferring $421.87 from the Electric Light
Fund to the Interest and Redemption Fund"
Councilman Morris seconded the motion and on roll call it was carried unanimously.
v 12 Councilman Eschen introduced and moved the adoption of
"Resolution No. 1831
Transferring $2500.00 from the General Fund
to the Electric Light Fund."
Councilman Bruzzone seconded the motion and on roll call it was carried unanimously.
7 13. Councilman Morris introduced and moved the adoption of
"Resolution No. 1832
Transferring $791.52 from the Compensation Insuranoe
fund to the Electric Light Fund."
Councilman Bruzzone seconded the motion and on roll call it was carried unanimously.
14. Councilman Eschen introduced and moved the adoption of
"Resolution No. 1833
Transferring $5,333.86 from the Electric Light Fund
to the General Fund."
Councilman Bruzzone seconded the motion and on roll call it was carried unanimously.
v/ 15. Councilman Morris introduced and moved the adoption of
"Resolution No. 1834
Urging People of Alameda and Alameda County to Vote
"Yes" on Courthouse Bond Issue at the Election of
April 3rd, 1934"
Councilman Bruzzone seconded the motion and on roll call it was carried unanimously.
