HELD WEDNESDAY EVENING NOVEMBER 7,1934
The meeting convened at 8 o'clock P.M. with President Murray presiding.
The roll was called and Councilmen Eschen, Morris Tiedemann and President Murray,
(4) were noted present. Absent: Councilman Bruzzone, (1).
The minutes of the regular meeting of October 16th.1934 and the special meeting
of October 18th, 1934 were read and approved.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS:
1. From the City Planning Commission approving the Council's resolution to reclassify
on its own motion the block bounded by Park Street, Lincoln Avenue, Oak Streeand Bank
Alley from Classes II and III to a Business District, Class V. The communication was
ordered filed.
2. From the City Planning Commission, afirming its previous recommendation for the
reclassification of 84 Union Street, from a Residence District, Class I, to a Residence
District, Class II, for the purpose of conducting a Rest Home. Councilman Morris Moved,
seconded by Councilman Eschen, and unanimously carried, that the recommendation be not
accepted, and the petition for reclassification be rejected.
3.v From the City Planning Commission, recommending that the petition for reclassifi-
cation of the southeast corner of St.Charles Street and Santa Clara Avenue, from a
Residence District, Class 1, to a Business District, Class V for the purpose of
constructing and maintaining a service station, be denied. On motion of Coundlman
Eschen, seconded by Councilman Morris and unanimously carried, the recommendation was
adopted.
V4. From Mrs. Frances E. Bowles, requesting that the ordinance prohibiting bicycle
riding on the sidewalks be rescinded in order that children might ride to school on
the sidewalks without endangering their lives. Upon motion of Councilman Eschen,
seconded by Councilman Morris and unanimously carried, the letter was referred to the
City Manager, with the explanation that the prohibition against children riding
bic cles on the sidewalks was not being enforced.
5. From the City Engineer, recommending that the Independent Construction Company be
awarded the contract for the improvement of Webster Street and that Heafey-Moore Co.,
be awarded the contract for(-the improvement of Maitland Drive, these being the respective
low bidders. On motion of w,ouncilman Eschen, seconded by Councilman Morris and unani-
mously carried, the recommendation was adopted, and the Mayor authorized to execute
the contracts and the Clerk to return the certified checks to the unsuccessful bidders.
I/6./ From the Redemption Clerk, submitting a list of properties sold for taxes to the
Cit, of Alameda on June 25th, 1934, and informing the Council that this list must be
advertised in accordance with Ordinance No. 250, New Series. On motion of Councilman
Morris, seconded by Councilman Eschen and unanimously carried, the Clerk was instructed
to publish the list.
v' 7.1 From the City Manager, recommending that the bid of the Seagrave Corporation for
the purchase of one 1000 gallon pumper for the Alameda Fire Department be accepted.
After the representative of the Mack-International Motor Truck Gorp.,one of the: bidders,
had requested the Council not to take action until he had time to familiarize himself
with the details of the bidding, the consideration of the City Manager's recommendation
was yut over until the next meeting of the Council.
8. At this time Mr. Wm.J. Locke addressed the Council questioning the correctness of
the procedure of the Council in denying the recommendation of the City Planning Com-
mission for the reclassification of property at 891 Union Street, and requested a
joint hearing on the petition by the Council and the Planning Commission. Mr. Byrne
also addressed the Council in behalf of the petition. On motion of Councilman Morris,
seconded by Councilman Eschen and unanimously carried, the Council designated Thurs-
day evening, November 15th, 1934, at 8 o'clock as the time for the hearing.

9. From the Alameda Women's Improvement Club, requesting the Council to have removed
all the trains standing along the estuary, as they are unsightly and an obstruction.
After it had been explained that the Southern Pacific Company had been requested on
numerous occasions to remove the obstructions, and had declined to do so, and that
the trains were located on the railroad company's right-of-way over which the City
had no jurisdiction, Councilman Eschen made a motion seconded by Councilman Morris,
and unanimously carried, thqt the communication be filed.
V 10.v From Mrs. Gladys D. Johnson, in reference to permitting bicycle riding on side-
walks. The communication was ordered filed.
NEW BUSINESS:
V 11,/ The following motion was introduced by Councilman Eschen, seconded by Councilman
Morris and unanimously carried:" I move that the City of Alameda make formal demand
on the Alameda Airport Inc., a corporation, and on all other proper parties, for
payment of the sum of $12,001.00 due the City under the leases of the AitTort and
Yacht Harbor lands, dated August 7th, 1928 and December 5th, 1929, and if payment be
not made that the City Attorney take all necessary legal steps and file such actions
in the Superior Court as may be necessary to enforce payment, forfeit said lease and
evict said lessee and sub-lessee from said premises."

Councilman Morris seconded the motion and on roll call it was carried unanimously.

Councilman Eschen seconded the motion and on roll call it was carried unanimously.
v 14. Councilman Eschen introduced and moved the adoption of
"Resolution No. 1887
Authorizing Execution of Agreement with
Southern Pacific Company, for ContructiOn
and Maintenance of Overhead Lines."
Councilman Morris seconded the motion and on roll call it was carried unanimously,

There being no further business to transact, the Council adjourned to meet
in adjourned regular meeting on Thursday evening, November 15th, 1934, at 8 otclock
P.M.
