FECIAL MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ALATYIEDA,
MONDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 21st, 1929.
The meeting convened at 8 :30 o'clock with Council- president Schaefer presiding.
The roll was called and Councilmen Brodersen, Calcutt, Henning, Latham and
President Schaefer, (5) were noted present.
The Clerk offered for filing, affidavit of delivery to council's official
addresses, copy of call for this special meeting.
A communication was received from Mr. R. E. Bosom ard, relative to transportation.
Read and ordered filed.
President Schaefer made a verbal report relative to the results of the meeting
of the Committee of the Whole with the Key System Transit Company officials; that
the Key System Transit Company agreed to put the busses back on Santa Clara Avenue
and also furnish transportation on San Jose Avenue to Grand Street; that the Key
System Transit Company refused to re- establish service west of Ofebster Street.
President Schaefer stated in addition that the result of the conference was not
satisfactory to him, inasmuch as the Key System Transit Company refused to re- establish the
west end service. After discussion, Mr. Brodersen moved that the council go on record
as favoring a municipally owned and operated bus line, and that the Transportation Com-
mittee be(instructed to report as to the probable cost and the manner in which a muni-
cipally owned bus line may be financed. The motion was seconded by Mr. Henning and
on roll call, the motion was lost by the following vote:- Ayes: Councilmen Brodersen
and Henning, (2). Noes; Councilmen Calcutt, Latham and President Schaefer, (3).
Further discussion then followed and Councilman Calcutt then moved! "That the question
of Alameda operating a municipal bus transportation system operating in and out of
Alameda be submitted to the citizens to vote upon; that the Cit; Manager proceed with the
preliminary steps of ascertaining the amount of money ;necessary to inaugurate a complete
system of busses, machine shops, garage room, and that a special election be called when
the City Manager presents ,costs and data requested; these costs and data to be pre-
sented at the meeting of the council to be held December 3rd, 1929.) The motion was
seconded by Mr. Latham and on roll call carried by the following vote:- Ayes
Councilmen Calcutt, Latham and President Schaefer, (3). Noes: Councilmen Brodersen and
Henning, (2).
Mr. Latham introduced and moved the adoption of
"Resolution No. 1439.
Resolution of Congratulation to Honorable
Thomas A. Edison."
Mr. Brodersen seconded the motion to adopt the Resolution and same was unanimously
adopted by rising vote of the Council.
There being no further business to transact the Council adjourned to meet
in regular session, Tuesday evening, November 5th, 1929 at 8 o'clock.
